Trains

..
OFF THE RAILS - a journal of locomotive decay
......

I began this series of paintings following a trip to Bolivia, where I came upon a couple of train cemeteries. One was on the outskirts of the Salar (a wide expanse of a dried up salt lake), the other in a town called Pulacayo, a short distance away in the mountains and the one time haunt of the infamous Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In fact, one of the trains in this series is thought to be the one in which the duo met their end, in a final shoot-'em-up showdown....but the bullet holes and hear-say seem a little unconvincing of its true provenance.

Mostly, I was taken by the range of colors and textures that time has rained upon the aged steel which, from a distance, appears only as a dull gray. My paintings exaggerate these colors and textures a little, but only a little.

All paintings in this series are oil on canvas and are 30" x 40".
